Laurie Gaylord has served on the Children’s Services Council of Martin County as the superintendent of the Martin County School District since 2012.

She moved to Martin County in 1996 after having resided in Boca Raton for 15 years.  Laurie is a Listening and Spoken Language Specialist, Certified Auditory-Verbal Therapist, in private practice.  She has worked for 31 years in Florida with families with deaf and hard of hearing children with cochlear implants and/or hearing aids.  She has contributed two publications in the field of Speech and Hearing and has been active in the Florida deaf and hard of hearing community since 1981.  She was appointed by Governor Jeb Bush to serve the Florida Coordinating Council for the Deaf/Hard of Hearing/Deaf/ Blind in 2004 and served for four years.  She is a past chair of the Florida state Chapter of the Alexander Graham Bell Association of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.  Laurie is frequently a guest lecturer at Florida Atlantic University and many groups throughout southeast Florida.

Laurie has a Master of Science degree in Speech and Hearing through the medical school at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri and a Bachelor of Science degree in Exceptional Student Education from Bloomsburg University, Bloomsburg, Pa.  Laurie has been a lifelong educator and active community volunteer.

Previous to her election as superintendent, she served on the Martin County School Board for 10 years and was the 2007 School Board Member of the Year presented by the Florida Consortium of Education Foundations.  Laurie is active in the community and currently serves on the Stuart/Martin County Chamber Board and the BioLife Science committee of the Economic Council.  She has served on the Children’s Services Council, the Head Start Policy Council, and is a volunteer with Inside Hobe Sound through the Hobe Sound Chamber.  She is a member of the Hobe Sound Chamber, the Junior League of Martin County, a graduate of Martin County LEADERSHIP Class 14 and a member of LEADERSHIP alumni.  She serves as a student mentor and advocate for children.

Laurie has been married to attorney Marc R. Gaylord for 30 years.  They have two children, both of whom graduated from Martin County Public Schools and the University of Florida.  Both are attending law school.
