Why It Matters:
- Before 3rd grade, children learn to read. After 3rd grade, they read to learn.
- Children not reading on grade level by the end of third grade are 4x more likely not to graduate from high school.
- 74% of those who struggle to read proficiently by third grade fall behind in later grades.
- Each student who doesn’t graduate high school costs society an estimated $260,000 in lost earnings, productivity, and taxes.
- Reading is the most essential skill for lifelong success.
